Coping when he's away sick

It's just not fair. Jim's often sick and we have to cover for him. It's frustrating because it slows us down.

If you have a colleague who is often absent you have choices in 3 areas.

  1. For yourself, do you allow the frustration to detract from the joy you have or do you see it as an opportunity. If you're an agathist you'll see it as an opportunity to learn patience and how to step up, adapt to make the most of the opportunity. The first thing you may have to do is speak to your leader about the resources you'll need to be highly effective.
  2. For your team, do you ask how the whole team is going to respond, ask your team mates to step up too. Hopefully your team has a connection meeting at the beginning of every day, if not your could convene one.
  3. For your colleague, you can consider it none of your business, or you can seek to understand how you can help. Depending on how well you know him you could ask how you can help. Is he being a victim? Does he understand that giving in to the smallest illness will bring down his morale? Take an interest in him and you'll be surprised how rewarding it is.

To say its not fair is to see yourself as a victim too and that thought is not going to serve you. No matter what happens to you through a day, you still have to go through the day. There is not escaping life, so you may as well accept the situation and then ask how can I make this situation serve me better.
