The cause and goals prompt"A couple of months ago I had a heart attack and I'm slowly recovering. My employer hopes I can get going again, but I don't know. My job is quite high pressure and I'm not sure I've got the stomach for it now."

"I used to be a big goal setter, but that all seems a bit pointless now."

This is the opening paragraph of a letter written to my friend Lindsey Dawson who hosts her own television show; Letters to Lindsey. She interviewed me for a different perspective on goal setting.

Quite clearly goals don't give us sustainable motivation.

Goal setting without some vital understanding only provides fleeting joy, and then only if we reach the goal, so immediately we have to set another. If we're ambitious we'll set a more challenging goal, we're told stretch is good for us. We like the thrill and the promise of reaping even bigger rewards, but every time, we amp up the goal, we amp up the stress.

As a young person we can cope, but as we get older our body starts to protest. A heart attack may just be our body saying, enough!

So what's a better way?

Goals have an important place in our lives, because without them we'd probably stay in bed and waste away. However highly effective people see goals as stepping stones to a bigger cause, not the driving force. ...

If you think 'I need inspiration, how to be self motivated' or you work to hard, you'll want to listen to the audio, the complete story, told by Donald Jessep, business coach, click on the yellow text in the box above.
