Mitch was steaming.
"Why can't they see it, up there in finance"
My guys down doing the work they know exactly what's needed to measure their performance. But those guys they just get them to do all this extra stuff. What on earth for, it just makes it harder for them to get the work out.
Mitch was pretty unhappy.
He was wanting to help the guys in finance understand. Wanting to work together as a team. But how could he get through them.
So we got to talk about a personal escalation plan. The process of escalating an issue through all the people, to the top. The process by which we become highly influential and powerful, rather than frustrated.
Because Mitch works at the coal face, he's right amongst the action. He is able to see what's needed. He has an insight into the workings of his team. With that insight he can see what has to change and he's highly motivated to make those changes. He wants the team to do well. Mitch a good guy, although you wouldn't think so if you just listened to his boss.
What he was trying to do was go directly from his insight to changing the beliefs of finance, the whole department. It just wasn't going to work.
What Mitch didn't understand was that to be more influential with people who think differently to him, he needs a deliberate process, a series of steps to make them understand.
