Struggling to get out of bed?
“Here we are struggling to make sense of another day”
These were the words thousands of people listened to on the radio as I did that morning. The phrase got me thinking. It was genuine attempt by Mike the radio host to welcome sleepy minds to the new day. He was enthusiastic and definitely well meaning, but I suspect he may have done more harm than good. Especially first thing in the morning when listeners were waking up, checking in with their bodies, and setting intentions for the day.
The word ‘struggle’ is not synonymous with feeling good. It can only conjure up less inspiring images.
It’s a classic example of words communicating the opposite to what is intended.
If we casually allow stimulus for uninspiring messages to seep into our brains as we wake up our expectation for the day can only be grim. Of course our ego will find evidence to support our deeply held expectations and so we believe our day turned out as we expected.
We tend to excuse people with words like ‘he got out of bed on the wrong side today’ but have we stopped to think what causes us to have a poor attitude.
Are we prepared to do something about it?
What to do about it.
In an ideal world we would set up our music player to turn on with uplifting music every morning. Or better we’d play music with lyrics composed especially for us, reminding us of our personal vision and intentions.
That takes considerable effort so in the meantime, I invite you to set your radio a few minutes earlier, so there is always music playing as you wake up.
And then choose to be in the shower while the news is being read to avoid damage to your perspective of the world.
